At 1.6 Degrees C (Golden Ratio) of warming, Earth risks crossing several catastrophic climate tipping points, which are irreversible thresholds where natural systems (like ice sheets or forests) trigger self-reinforcing, runaway collapse. The widespread die-off of warm-water coral reefs—the planet’s first major tipping point—is already locked in.
Pushing to 1.6 Degrees C substantially heightens the risk of triggering more of these critical thresholds. Tipping points highly vulnerable in the Golden Ratio range include:
- Greenland Ice Sheet: Melting at an accelerated, irreversible rate, which could eventually raise global sea levels by over \(7\) meters.
- Amazon Rainforest: Pushed toward a fatal die-back and conversion into savannah due to a combination of rising temperatures and ongoing deforestation.
- West Antarctic Ice Sheet: At risk of unstable, unstoppable collapse.
- Permafrost Thaw: Releasing massive amounts of trapped methane and carbon dioxide, leading to further atmospheric warming
